FOX DESIGNweek 2012

Challenge: North Broadband

Challenge: February 13-16
Awards Ceremony: February 17

  • re-imagine the future of the city
  • inspire, mobilize and create to solve complex urban challenges
  • build a sustainable open platform to encourage and support a vibrant ecosystem of neighbors, entrepreneurs and communities

Modern American cities were built on physical infrastructure over a century ago and now face historic challenges embracing digital infrastructure to reinvent the meaning of “urban life.”

Temple University established the Urban Apps & Maps Studio to build urban digital entrepreneurship in North Philadelphia by connecting Temple University’s resources with the local community and businesses.

The design challenge is to leverage Temple’s resources and other existing technology assets along North Broad Street and the surrounding area to envision new products and services inspired by the opportunities in North Philadelphia as a living laboratory of a digital urban ecosystem.

Designs should be environmentally responsible, economically sustainable, and humanly satisfying.

The solution must be replicable and scalable, as it serves as a prototype for larger initiatives.

Themes to explore include:

  • Public Health
  • Education
  • Transportation
  • Personal Finance
  • Community Building

About the Challenge

THE DESIGNweek CHALLENGE is an annual student competition to transform ideas into actions. Organized by the Center for Design and Innovation and the Fox School of Business, the Challenge brings together students from across the University and our partner institutions to collaborate across disciplinary lines to create innovative solutions to address some of today’s most challenging urban issues.

All students of Temple University and our partner institutions are eligible to enter the competition. Students will enter individually. They will be placed in diverse teams comprised of varied schools, skills and disciplines.
